Google’s NotebookLM just turned my humble Blueberry-Passionfruit Smoothie recipe into a dramatic, laugh-out-loud narrated video — and I can’t stop watching it.

The new Video Overviews feature is like having a video editor, narrator, and designer all rolled into one AI. You give it your content a research report, a pitch deck, a travel guide, or in my case, a slightly confused smoothie and it transforms it into a fully narrated, visually rich explainer.

And trust me, when an AI describes your banana as “the calm, grounding force in what is otherwise beautiful chaos,” you know you’re onto something special.

What Are Video Overviews?

NotebookLM started with Audio Overviews, AI-generated podcast-style summaries. Now, Video Overviews take it further, adding visuals, captions, and callouts pulled directly from your source material.

With Video Overviews, you can:

  • Turn long, serious documents into short, watchable videos.
  • Add images, diagrams, and quotes automatically.
  • Set tone, focus, and audience.
  • Make even a smoothie recipe feel like a TED Talk crossed with a Netflix trailer.

How the Smoothie Script Came to Life

I fed NotebookLM my original whimsical recipe — a drink caught between healthy breakfast virtue and midweek cocktail mischief. The AI took that transcript and delivered:

  • Character arcs: Blueberries became “heroes” you might have foraged after fighting woodland creatures; the banana was recast as “emotional stability in a glass.”

  • Conflict & resolution: The “blender’s divorce” scene, where blending gets just a bit too dramatic.

  • Final flourish: The “smug sip,” complete with an imaginary tropical umbrella.

What came out wasn’t just a recipe — it was a short film about self-discovery, starring fruit.

How to Create Your Own Video Overview

  1. Upload or open your notebook in NotebookLM.
  2. Go to the Studio panel (where you’d make audio overviews).
  3. Select “Video Overview.”
  4. Customize tone, focus, and audience.
  5. Watch Gemini AI turn your content into a fully narrated, visual story.

Other Studio Elements Worth Exploring

While Video Overviews steal the spotlight, NotebookLM’s Studio panel offers more ways to turn your sources into engaging formats:

  • Audio Overview — AI-generated podcast-style summaries for quick listening.
  • Mind Map — A visual network that connects key ideas and shows relationships.
  • Reports — Well-structured, shareable summaries pulled directly from your materials.

The beauty is that all these formats pull from the same set of sources, so you can mix and match depending on whether your audience prefers listening, watching, or reading.

And if you’re ready to try Video Overviews for yourself, here are some example prompts to spark ideas.

Prompts Worth Trying

You can use Video Overviews for almost anything — here are a few example prompts you could try, depending on your project:

  • Recipe, Food Blog, or Cocktail Guide

“Create a 90-second playful video overview of this recipe. Highlight personality, quirks, and sensory details. Add whimsical narration.”

  • Startup Pitch Deck

“Summarize this pitch deck into a 2-minute video for investors. Keep it upbeat, use visuals for key stats.”

  • Historical Lesson

“Create a 4-minute educational video on the Renaissance with dates, figures, and cultural milestones.”

  • Case Study

“Turn this research into a professional 3-minute explainer for industry peers.”

💡 Pick the one that matches your content and audience

Why This Is a Game-Changer

NotebookLM now lets you create audio, video, mind maps, and written reports from the same set of sources:

  • No switching between editing tools.
  • One workflow, multiple formats.
  • Consistent voice and faster turnaround.

💡 Pro Tip: Don’t just use Video Overviews for serious topics — feed it something unexpected. Your pet’s daily routine. A coffee order. Or, yes, a smoothie that can’t decide if it’s a health drink or a mini vacation.
